Jessica loved being with her friends – Ella, Emily, Irene and Jina. Jessica kept “being the boss” but subconsciously. She didn’t know of this weakness at all. Her friendship with her four friends had distanced but she acted as if nothing was wrong. Finally, the dreaded day came. Her four friends wanted a total break-off.
“No!” she objected. “Why?”
They didn’t answer and walked away. Jessica slumped on the pillar next to her. WHY? That question repeated itself many times in her brain. It was supposed to be a fun day – there was an excursion to the Road Safety Park. This had ruined it.
The bus arrived and Jessica’s class started to board it. Everyone was with a friend except for her. She felt lonely. She leaned against the window and tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably. A classmate noticed her crying and informed the teacher. The teacher asked her what was wrong and asked Jina to sit with her. Jessica felt a tiny bit comforted, but not for long.
Once at the Park, Jina abandoned her and returned to the other three girls. Jessica was alone again. All the feelings of loneliness returned to her. For the whole day, she felt down.
Slowly, as the days passed, she slipped into mild depression. She felt confused, puzzled, sad and angry. At the very least what her so-called “friends” could do was to tell her why they did not want to be friends with her! She sought help from her teachers and parents. A few meetings were arranged but all did not turn out well. Her classmates were starting to take sides. Only a few friends were on her side.
She thought of a plan to find out the reasons. She asked two friends to act as her “spies” to listen to gossip the three girls were spreading. She thought this was the best way to find out why they did not want to be friends with her. Unfortunately, her plan was found out and reported to the teacher. What Jessica got was a scolding from her teacher and her mother. Jessica felt angry. Her teacher accused her of bribing her two friends. Although she denied, her teacher held firm. Back at home, her mother also started accusing her.
Because of this, Jessica missed many days of school. She thought that her whole world was collapsing and school was meaningless. Her few friends had their own best friends and when it came to group or pair work, no one would work with her. No one would be with her during recess. The problem went on unsolved and dragged on over the next year.
One day, Jina approached her and told her the reason. She listed all of Jessica’s shortcomings.
“Then why didn’t you all tell me earlier? You should be honest with me, and then I can change. If you don’t tell me anything, how am I supposed to change??” Jessica exclaimed.
“Oh Jess... We did not tell you because... Because... We were fed up and sure that you wouldn’t change,” Jina replied.
“How did you know I wouldn’t change?” Jessica asked.
Jina was then stumped for words. Finally, she uttered a word of apology.
“I should say sorry to you too. Sorry,” Jessica said. “So we’re friends again?”
“Yah!” Jina replied joyfully.
Life is so RANDOM.
